Unlike asphalt pavers are virtually maintenance-free and do not need to be regularly sealed or replaced. By definition concrete pavers have a minimum compressive strength of 8000 psi (about 3 times stronger than regular poured concrete) and a maximum water absorption rate of 5%. Concrete pavers are extremely dense units which possess exceptional strength and durability superior stability under severe loads and are unaffected by the extremes of heat and frost. Each unit has joints that allow for a small amount of movement without cracking. Factory made pavers last for decades.
Unlike wood or real stone concrete pavers do not crack or react to absorption of water. Wood will rot if not sealed to resist the penetration of water. Real stone will also become vulnerable to constant moisture. Pavers do absorb water but do not change their inherent structure. They do not flake or become weakened by the presence of water or moisture. Debris that accumulates naturally simply needs to be swept or hosed off. Application of a sealer is optional and not required. Sealers are often used where someone wants the pavers to take on an enhanced tone. Sealers will also help to resist the absorption of stains as concrete pavers are porous just like natural stone.
Dirt does not tend to tick on them stubbornly and hence a simple wiping of the surface or pressure washing if stains are too greasy gets rid of any unwanted deposited. In fact the water board recommends sealing concrete pavers in order to save water. By sealing a paver you are essentially putting a shield that protects it from being damaged due to various factors such as reaction with acid and fungal infestations. Further it prevents sand and cement in the joints from washing out due to heavy rains and storms thus preventing loosening of stones. The hazardous effects of freezing and thawing that tend to ruin most of the pavers is eliminated due to sealing. Sealing pavers protects them under all weathers and high traffic loads. As a result your paver is well preserved.
Power wash brick paver areas using a 2700 psi power washer or greater. You may or may not need to use a paver cleaner during this process. Sweep joint sand into all the joints of the pavers and water down with a light spray from a garden hose. Sweep sand and water down a second time to ensure joints are full of joint sand. Once dry confirm joints are full with joint sand and move on to the next step. Having these joints completely filled and compacted will help maintain paver stability. Apply a joint stabilizing sealer on all the paver areas. The sealer hardens the sand which helps prevent water intrusion in the joints and insects digging through it!
