A good cover letter should highlight your core skills answer the question: "Why should I see you" and generate enough interest for them to read your CV. In a sense a well written covering letter works like an agent on your behalf. Taking the time to write a compelling letter tells the employer you are willing to go above and beyond; not just simply slap a resume in an envelope and mail it. The competition is intense in the job market these days and so it has become very important to have the benefit of an eye catching cover letter. No two letters should ever be the same; each one should be uniquely tailored to the job for which you are applying. A generic cover letter is insulting to an employer and will quickly find its way into the trashcan.
If you want a few extra brownie points you might try laughing while writing your cover letter chances are if you find it funny and entertaining so might the hiring manager that has been bored to tears for hours sifting through all the others. The purpose of the cover letter is not to highlight your skills education or prowess in your field but rather to entice the hiring manger that yours is the resume he or she wants to pay attention to over the many others that have graced his or her desk. You are not likely to do this if your cover letter sounds like all the others that have come his or her way.

In general for every one hundred cover letters one sends out they will only receive a response to ten percent. This does not mean the response will be favorable either. Between the option of sending out one hundred generic cover letters with the return response of ten percent or twenty personalized cover letters with the return response of thirty percent which seems like the best method? Additionally with the latter option the responses are going to be favorable at least half the time.
