Cover Letter Definition
With resume cover letters so readily available it goes to show that most people use this method when applying for jobs. It is also an assumption that the way to land an interview is by being one of the first applicants for the job. This is not necessarily the case. A hiring manager is looking for the best candidate for the job and is not simply going to choose the first person to come along. They want to find the best applicant. If a resume cover letter does not grab their attention which is what a resume cover letter achieves then they are not going to waste time reviewing the applicant further.
Did it garner the interview for you as it should have? If yes keep it up you are on the path to being hired. If not immediately give that letter to a trusted friend and ask for the most brutal assessment as possible. Check your ego at the door and open yourself up to hard constructive criticism. I am not going to get into the psycho-babble of why you may or may not be able to write effective cover letters. If you have some hang-ups that keep you from promoting yourself get over it. What is a resume cover letter? It is a piece of paper that is submitted along with your resume or curriculum vitae.
